The Beatles

today Apple and EMI are releasing two box sets: The Beatles Stereo Box Set and The Beatles in Mono, two epic compilations of remastered stereo and mono recordings of the complete Beatles studio catalog. beautiful. to mark my renewed obsession (sparked by both the box sets and also by seeing the Cirque du Soleil show LOVE in Las Vegas with Adam), i'm making this little post, which falls back on a classic six stars strategy: speechlessness at sheer musical genius.

  1. well done, well done. but you have made one very grievous error! namely, "magical mystery tour" was really just a six-song EP in the UK. in the US, they re-released it with a weird booklet and all the extra 1967 singles. so while we're including EPs with original material (Yellow Submarine being another one of those, four new songs, the rest is George Martin soundtrack music and two or three tracks from earlier albums), you should put up the Long Tall Sally EP. also change the magical mystery tour cover to this one: http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/025d3edeb16f6ca4c1c8aa5ecf2c4149/o13022.jpg

  2. ah.. i know, i know. i went with the latest convention instead of original releases.

from Wikipedia: "Initially packaged as a double EP in the UK, the recording was expanded to a full album on concurrent U.S. release, adding several recent singles to the B-side. This has since been adopted by Apple and EMI when the Beatles' discography was being put on Compact Disc, and is the only US release of theirs for which this was done."

  3. stupid us-uk differences... :( imo, release it the way the artist intended! the beatles kept their singles on 7" records, and their albums largely single-free (except on some of the pre-rubber soul records). apparently the US market loved putting singles on albums, to boost sales. they did the same shit to the stones (and the who as well, i believe... but i don't listen to the who :-)

i think i'm going to have to pirate every single mono re-release. actually, first i'll have to check which recordings were released in mono and which in stereo. i know that at least up to sgt pepper's and probably including it they were all in mono. that is, they released both mono and stereo but their concentration during mastering was easily on the mono stuff. the stereo beatles recordings sound awkward, WAY too much pan.
